"THE FEAR THAT YOU ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO CHANGE"

Alazia (Ancient Greek: Ἀλαζία)  - a city of ancient Mysia near the River Odrysses, which flows out of Lake Dascylitis from the west through the plain of Mygdonia and empties into the Rhyndacus ( Wikipedia )
OR
It can be an abstract noun depicting an emotion that had no "name" in the English language until John Koenig came along and coined his "Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows" .   If Webster can do it , he can too.

⚡ALAZIA⚡

When you were born, you could have been anybody. So quick and malleable, your parents could look at your face and see a future president. They tried to mold you as you grew, but they could only work with what they had. And when their tools stopped working, they gradually handed them off to you, asking, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

There’s a certain art to becoming who you are. There’s no standard kit you can use to assemble yourself, swapping out parts as needed. Instead, it feels more like a kind of stretching, a teasing out at the edges, like a glassblower standing at the furnace.

A teenage personality is a delicate medium, its emotions almost too heavy to handle. You had to figure out a way to keep yourself together and tease out the good parts without falling out of balance or stretching yourself too thin. You couldn’t stop everything to try to fix your flaws, but you couldn’t just ignore them either. Luckily, you were nothing if not flexible, softened by the heat of youth, which kept you warm on a dingy couch or a night in the wilderness. You knew that you weren’t just you, you were also the person you would one day become. So even when you failed, you could still be whatever you wanted to be. As long as you kept moving.

Inevitably you got hit, and you got hurt. You prided yourself on how well you absorbed the blow, bouncing back as if nothing had happened. But the pain changed you, in little chips and cracks that might take you years to notice. Over time you learned how to position yourself in very specific ways, protecting the most vulnerable parts of your psyche, even as you knew they were still a crucial part of the real you. Gradually you became more and more reluctant to move from that position. Growing a little harder, a little more brittle.

Greek αλλάζω (allázo), to change + dysplasia, abnormal development of tissue. Pronounced “uh- ley-zhuh” or “ah-ley-zee-uh.”

DIMINISHERS

1/7/2024

DIMINISH  -  To make or become less ,   Cause to seem less impressive or valuable ..... says the dictionary.

How does this apply to us from the perspective of people's auras and their effect on us in daily living ?

Diminishers see people as objects to be used, not as persons to know and care for. “Diminishers are so into themselves, they make others feel insignificant… If they learn one thing about you, they proceed to make a series of assumptions about who you must be.” Diminishers fit well into today’s mainstream culture, which elevates striving for ourselves.

While at the opposite end , we have “illuminators” .   Those who are curious and want to know others. “They shine the brightness of their care on people and make them feel bigger, deeper, respected, and lit up,” says Brooks. They meet us more than half way and fill a deep need we all have ,  to be seen.
They are the opposite of “diminishers.”

Do you illuminate or diminish people? - The Aspen Institute
Concept taken from David Brooks and his book -  How to know a Person
The Art of Conversation: Are You an Illuminator or a Diminisher? – 100.7 Riverland Life FM

I would go on to say that "diminishers" have a poor sense of self , and hence shine a weak light on their surroundings .  Added to that , they might even blame their hazy surroundings !

For the longest time i thought i did not understand "toxicity" , but life has taught me well into my 50's.    Having to deal with negative emotions on a regular basis from those closest can be quite draining. Is so-and-so really at fault ? Really the cause of your pain ? Or is he just a willing and polite crutch holding up the curtain of your anger and self-confusion , knowing full well that if he were to move away , you might come tumbling down and hurt yourself badly.

Who then is the rightful diminisher , and who then the illuminator in this complex web of life ?

KURASHI

“The true purpose of tidying is not to cut down on your possessions or declutter your space,” says Marie. “The ultimate goal is to spark joy every day and lead a joyful life.” That goal — that inner why — can help guide everything that we do, and it expands well beyond the home. This is what Marie calls kurashi.
konmari.com/what-is-kurashi/

(Japanese)  Meaning: life, living, livelihood, life circumstances
( And ooops not to be confused with Karoshi (Japanese: 過労死 ),  a Japanese term relating to occupation-related sudden death , usually by “over-work”  ,  heart attacks , stress-related strokes !! )

Back to KURASHI –

Kurashi at Home: How to Organize Your Space and Achieve Your Ideal Life
This Marie Kondo book summary finds me today on Blinkist .  I resonate with the peace that comes from pottering around one’s home ,  the charm of cleanliness , the delight of decluttering .   Marie Kondo  (DOB 9th October 1984)   -  Titan of Tidying Up.   Empress of the Enjoyable Environment movement.   Its not about neatness.  Its not about perfection.  Its not about pristine standards.   It’s about that which brings you joy.
Listening to the 15 minute synopsis  has reinforced my own deep appreciation and awareness of simple objects and well used gadgets around my home and modest garden.   (Endless dried eucalyptus leave, spiders included ) .   I am transported back to the spring of 2019 in Japan , where we were smacked by the small yet highly efficient spaces of Tokyo and surrounds.  Every square inch of space was uniquely crafted , exemplifying the Japanese trait of always being and looking one step ahead .
I find myself viewing routine tasks and chores with a grateful perspective.   More of  a happy “I get to” attitude rather than “I got to”.     “I get to” wash dishes until they are clean , “I get to” smell the fragrance of clean laundry , “I get to” water the garden on a hot day .  “I get to” enjoy my groove  in a country that is safe and democratic.

Functionality , making do , optimizing per se (whether space/life/time) are habits that appeal to me.   I  have lived in a large-ish family home in Australia with unending upkeep and housework.   “Rearranging” – is a manifestation of my inner joy and when I am at peace with the world.   Tinkering with my old artefacts.   Pruning plants in the alfresco.  Raking leaves in the garden for the umpteenth time ,  I feel the peace that I imagine monks in a monastery might experience at dawn.    I have also sampled (rather late in life)  a married-bachelorette’s regimen in Dubai in a spartan rented one bedroom apartment where I own nothing . Here ,  after the initial “scarcity withdrawal syndrome”    I have come to enjoy the richness of minimalism. To keep claustrophobia at bay ,  long daily walks are essential (even multiple times) , to ease the stress of driving in traffic and long days at work.   So you see, it’s not about the square metreage or the height of your ceiling.  It’s the feeling that these spaces evoke in you and others.

“The true purpose of tidying is not to cut down on your possessions or declutter your space,” says Marie. “The ultimate goal is to spark joy every day and lead a joyful life.” That goal — that inner why — can help guide everything that we do, and it expands well beyond the home. This is what Marie calls kurashi   konmari.com/what-is-kurashi/

KURASHI  has its roots in the ancient Japanese Shinto religion , where supernatural beings called KAMI are said to inhabit all objects and aspects of nature.  Animistic and Polytheistic , regardless of our beliefs , it’s a nice perspective.

Imagine yourself as one of the objects .    Personify them .   Do you feel what they feel ?  What are they saying to you ?    A cup on the mug tree ?  A plant pot in the garden ?  A picture on the wall ?  The toilet brush?    Are they happy where they are ?  What do they experience on a daily basis ?
Develop small routines and rituals .  Early morning or late night ones are the best.  Before the home stirs or after it sleeps.   More about personality and less about “perfection”.   A mistake I have often made in my younger and excessively house-proud days .  Admonishing the children for their messiness.   Wanting to keep up with those Jumeirah Joneses.
Your home is your ambassador – how should it represent you ?      Have simple furniture that expresses the authentic you .  Quiet ?  Reserved ?  Friendly ?  Bustling ?   Warm ?   Fiery ? Unhurried ?  Busy ?   For most of us ,  our walls are a  safe haven from the madness we might experience outside now and again.   ( And yes, when this peace is sometimes shattered , we feel homeless until we recover ... )

What if every decision you made, every goal you set and every aspect of your life was guided by what sparks joy?”

WHAT IS KURASHI AT HOME THEN ?

KURASHI is about respect.  Keeping things back in their space , in THEIR “home” , where they are comfortable ,  ready for reuse the next time and for the next person.     Tidying up brings joy  , automated mundane chores are a chance to practice meditation in one’s private temple.
KURASHI is about recycling .  Getting rid of what has run its course , with gratefulness ,  and making way for something new and improved.
KURASHI is about aligning your home and living space with your way of life , sparking joy and stirring pride in every task , object and space.

Soul-searching comparison by Dene Logan.   Which camp do you fit into ?

Challenging Dependency.

Let’s explore the word dependency for a moment.
If you look up the word “dependency” in the dictionary, the first word that comes up is “subordinate.” The next descriptor is “under the jurisdiction of.”    So, if you think about what each of these descriptions are essentially alluding to - they’re pointing out that some external force has power over me as a sovereign being.

But this is always the case with any form of dependency - whether it be a chemical dependency or a behavioral one - what’s required is the belief that we need some specific thing outside of ourselves for survival. This gives this entity a form of power over us.

And when we believe our survival depends on something outside of ourselves, we will abandon ourselves…turn ourselves into someone we no longer recognize…and feel that we have lost our conscious ability to choose…to maintain that connection.   This is true of any addictive tendency.  And what’s rarely acknowledged on a societal level, is that codependency is one of the most pervasive, and socially acceptable forms of addiction. I say this because all of our addictive tendencies essentially boil down to a dependency on an external source to regulate our internal world. Codependency is the attempt to regulate our internal world through our relationship to another person.

But what’s tough about codependency - is that similar to a food addiction, we (as social animals) do actually need our connections to other human beings for survival. It’s not like a chemical dependency where we’re able to confront the addiction by abstaining from the substance all together.  But, also, similar to when we are attempting to heal a food addiction, it becomes important to recognize when a necessary aspect of our human experience has morphed into a maladaptive one.

As adults, we are not dependent on being in relationship with any one specific human being for our survival. It can certainly feel at times like we are, but that’s not actually the case.
So, the question becomes, what is the line between healthy connection and dependency?
For me, it always comes back to:
  • fear versus love
  • obligation versus authentic desire
  • transaction versus connection
  • perpetuation of wounds versus a container that supports our healing

Because as long as I am in a relationship with you, defending against losing our attachment at all costs – it hinders my ability to experience true intimacy with you.
I will withhold
I will manipulate
I will perform
I won’t actually see you -
I will see you through the lens of my attempt to avoid the pain of losing you.

INTERDEPENDENCE is how we integrate our need for INTIMACY with our Soul’s need to maintain a healthy sense of INDEPENDENCE.
The practice of interdependence takes ownership templates off the table completely. This way of relating  challenges us to be present in our relationships, and shifts the relational dynamic to one where we are consciously choosing.
This is the practice of remembering that each of us are already whole. And in this knowing, we can create an authentic sense of connection with another - while maintaining an authentic connection with ourselves.

SELF EFFICACY

Extract From “Emotional Intelligence” by Daniel Goleman

SELF EFFICACY
The belief that one has mastery over the events of one’s life and can meet challenges as they come up .  Developing a competency of any kind strengthens the sense of self-efficacy making a person willing to take more risks and seek out more demanding challenges.   People’s beliefs about their abilities have a profound effect on those abilities.  Ability is not a fixed property , there is a huge variability in how you perform.  People who have a sense of self efficacy bounce back from failures.

Confidence as a spectrum and in another guise ?

What Is Self-Efficacy? Definition and Examples (thoughtco.com)

Key Takeaways: Self-Efficacy
  • Self-efficacy refers to the set of beliefs we hold about our ability to complete a particular task.
  • According to psychologist Albert Bandura, the first proponent of the concept, self-efficacy is the product of past experience, observation, persuasion, and emotion.
  • Self-efficacy is linked to academic achievement and the ability to overcome phobias.

Daniel Goleman (born March 7, 1946) is an author, psychologist, and science journalist. For twelve years, he wrote for The New York Times, reporting on the brain and behavioral sciences. His 1995 book Emotional Intelligence was on The New York Times Best Seller list for a year and a half

THINK-E-TATION

10/31/2022

THINK-E-TATION coined by Tim Bilyeu ,
the state and place where 80% of his best business ideas flow !

A combination of thinking and meditation . More like the active thoughts that flow AFTER any “transcendental practice”  -- whether conventional meditation , walking , exercise , box breathing , or simply calling to mind a loved one with feeling and compassion …..
Coined by Tim Bilyeu of Impact Theory fame  -   Its’ that amazing state of a free-flowing mind post “mental warm up”  ,  accompanied by feelings of  exuberance and confidence .
If we could access this state at will ,   creativity and problem-solving would be on the uptick.    Eighty per cent of Bilyeu’s best business ideas have come from this state of being and he practices it regularly – DAILY.    One of his triggers is Box Breathing .

STEP ONE -  EXERCISE / MEDITATE
STEP TWO – THINK-E-TATE

Another aspect could be going deeper into Theta state and merging levels of consciousness like some tribals do.   As opposed to a monophasic state (single) state of consciousness , unlike tribals who discuss dreams at 4.00 am and believe that the dream world is as real as the physical polyphasic states ) .   Meditation helps you tap into these altered states .  However , even at the basic practical everyday level , what could work is the simple two-step formula above.

Just like you should be aware of your circadian rhythm for optimal and beneficial sleep , you should be aware of your optimal transcendental practice – the one that will lead you to the flow state and heightened creativity.    This can save you some drudgery and hours of unfocussed toil.

Burning the midnight oil groggily   vs  working creatively and optimally.  Surrendering to intuition and inner space .  Hustling leads to broken marriages , poor relationships with kids , ageing faster …. So why do we persistently advocate this path as the ONLY way,  when there’s a better solution ?
Aha moment in my own work life.    Previously advocating “hard work” as dad did … but realizing now.   The key is not the quantity but the quality of work-hours.  As it is with sleep-hours. As it is with practically anything of substance.

A pre-requisite of think-e-tation is TIME !!!  It cannot be super rushed.  You need those moments to warm up . clear your mind and get into the groove.

T I M E  =  Think-e-tation Is a Magnificent Experience !!! 😊 😊

QUIET-QUITTING

Quiet-Quitting : Doing what is required at work , but NOT going above and beyond.

Quiet- Quitting ;   A phenomenon of the corporate world as opposed to self-employment.  A bit of a misnomer, as i understand you are not  "quitting" your job at all , just NOT going above and beyond.  Doing the essentials in the absolute 9-5 realm of time.
Wow !  This would have been considered shabby and "unprofessional" 20 years ago .  Quiet quitters would have been scorned as lazy , lacking ambition and a bad example to the team.  I would have personally felt that too ...and yet here i am , thinking that TIME in my greatest asset, and so wishing i had more of it.  Such a bundle of contradictions as usual , and ashamed of my own double standards.

INDISTRACTABLE

distraction (n.)

Latin dis (away) + trahere
Distract comes from the Latin dis (away) + trahere (to draw or to drag). When we are distracted, we are drawn away from our focus.

mid-15c., distraccioun,  "the drawing away of the mind from one point or course to another or others," from Latin distractionem (nominative distraction) "a pulling apart, separating," noun of action from past-participle stem of distrahere "draw in different directions"

Stumbled across the word I*N*D*I*S*T*R*A*C*T*A*B*L*E last week and am totally HOOKED , which by the way is the title of the first book written by Nir Eyal  .   Intrigued with his cleverly named website  , nirandfar.com 😊 i  need to explore more.    Enjoying the research process about INDISTRACTABILITY , in the hopes that i can become so myself.    I always know what i SHOULD be doing, but get steered away by Mr. Resistance with a Capital R ( 🙏 Steven Pressfield 🙏)

Distraction -  Getting pulled away from doing the things you had set your mind to.
vs
Traction - Sticking to a schedule and intended tasks. Keeping your word to yourself.
by means of appropriate
Action !
Isn't it etymologically amazing how these (03) words fit right into each other ?! 💖⚡💖

Lightbulb Moment !   ⚡⚡
The opposite of distraction is NOT focus , but TRACTION.

Distraction is as old as the hills .   We cannot blame it  solely on modern external triggers like televisions ,  mobile phones and social media .  What about human interruptions ?  ( My pet peeve )    If we could develop traction ,  focus , time-respect ,  how much more mileage we could get out of our days.  We safeguard our material possessions and yet squander time, the most precious commodity , generously doled out nearly equitably to everyone in terms of hours in a day.

We keep sacrificing the important for the sake of the "urgent".
The opposite of Distraction is not Focus but TRACTION.
                                                                                                                             - Nir Eyal

Four ways to becoming INDISTRACTABLE
1. Mastering your internal triggers  - Its not the television , the pings and dings , but the discomfort within that we are trying to escape.
2. Making time for TRACTION - You can avoid distraction only if you know what it is you are meant to be doing in the first place.  They key "Forethought and Planning"  .   Prepare a broad schedule , organize your time .  Traction is anything you "intend" to do .
3. Hacking back the external triggers - These are neither good nor bad.   Just a matter of perception and effective utilization.   Is tech serving us or are we serving the tech-makers ?    Are we usually reacting instead of steering ?   Tons of emails , pointless meetings , human interruptions , chatter ....... 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️
4. Preventing distraction with PACTS
- Effort Pact  :  Devising a simple hack to prevent a physical distraction , e.g. switching off the router at a certain time ?  K-safe - a food locked piggybank for Oreos and other yummies.
- Price Pact  :   Small monetary reward to self , e.g. $10.00. in a piggy bank for a week without chocolate ?
- Identity Pact :  A moniker that appeals and promotes your intent , e.g. a vegetarian

BANNISTER EFFECT

2/15/2021

"The Bannister Effect" is the phenomenon of one person showing others that it can be done and, thus, prompting others to believe and achieve.27 Dec 2017
The Bannister Effect - LinkedIn

When Roger Bannister  (23 March 1929 – 3 March 2018)  broke running records back in 1954 , at the age of 26 ,  did he think that his name would become synonymous with
  • Believing in and improving oneself ?
  • Doing the impossible ?
  • Overcoming boundaries ?
  • Exhibiting grit and perseverance ?
  • Opening doors  ?
  • Transforming mind sets ?
What motivated this sporty neurologist back then ?   What were his goals ?
Picture
Roger BannisterFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sir Roger Gilbert Bannister CH CBE FRCP (23 March 1929 – 3 March 2018) was a British middle-distance athlete and neurologist who ran the first sub-4-minute mile.
At the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Bannister set a British record in the 1500 metres and finished in fourth place. This achievement strengthened his resolve to become the first athlete to finish the mile run in under four minutes. He accomplished this feat on 6 May 1954 at Iffley Road track in Oxford, with Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher providing the pacing. When the announcer, Norris McWhirter, declared "The time was three...", the cheers of the crowd drowned out Bannister's exact time, which was 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. He had attained this record with minimal training, while practising as a junior doctor. Bannister's record lasted just 46 days.
Bannister went on to become a neurologist and Master of Pembroke College, Oxford, before retiring in 1993.

As I read and explore the concept of  “ The Bannister Effect” I see two opposing views.  One that elevates Roger Bannister to a running hero , the other that attributes the previous “stagnation”  of 10 years in the 4-mile running record to WWII and the preoccupation of the world to more serious matters at the time, as well the modernization of training after the 1950’s.

Even if we adopt the more conversative and practical approach, I’m all for the underlying “limitless belief” principle behind the “Bannister” message .  Our beliefs influence what we attempt or choose not to attempt and there lies that  winning millisecond.

“I’m going to Bannister my maths exam next week”

“Covid Pandemic restrictions ?   Bannister that with the internet and working from home ”

“Let’s get fit and Bannister the treadmill over the next four weeks”

…. So what are YOU planning to bannister today ?

Neuroplasticity

Picture
 Noun

  1. The ability of the brain to form and reorganize synaptic connections , especially in response to learning or experience or following injury.

"neuroplasticity offers real hope to everyone from stroke victims to people with dyslexia"

We semicentennials grew up in the “now or never” age.  Like the Elvis Presley song.  Learn it now or forever do without.  Dad’s voice still reverberates telling me I had to learn the piano before the age of 10 , or I might never be able to.  He was very strict about it.   No blame.  Just the thinking of those times.    Dad then went on to live with me in Australia, bless him, when I did my AMEB Higher level Piano exams Grades 1-8 at age 43-47.    Willingness won hands down.  Neuroplasticity is one of the most hopeful terms I’ve learnt after 50.   It gives me immense confidence and hope for what is yet to be.   It motivates me to be a lifelong learner.  To pursue , to excel , to never give up.   To even learn about website building and begin this blog .

All I know is keep those neurons firing and they stay fired.  Keep them idle and dull, and they rust.

Medical Definition of neuroplasticity : the capacity of the brain to develop and change throughout life, something Western science once thought impossible. — Time, 8 May 2006

Neuroplasticity, also known as neural plasticity, or brain plasticity, is the ability of neural networks in the brain to change through growth and reorganization. These changes range from individual neuron pathways making new connections, to systematic adjustments like cortical remapping. Examples of neuroplasticity include circuit and network changes that result from learning a new ability, environmental influences, practice, and psychological stress.
Neuroplasticity was once thought by neuroscientists to manifest only during childhood, but research in the latter half of the 20th century showed that many aspects of the brain can be altered (or are "plastic") even through adulthood.  However, the developing brain exhibits a higher degree of plasticity than the adult brain.  Activity-dependent plasticity can have significant implications for healthy development, learning, memory, and recovery from brain damage
