ELEPHANTS IN THE ROOM

Elephants in the room play tug-of-war with my heart ,
To speak or not to speak ,  disagreeable discussion to start ?
Elephants in the room fight hard to be heard ,
The debate goes on as to which is preferred .
A false silence ,  some small talk and questions inane ?
Unspoken words and stiff politeness  driving me insane .
Would it be right to cut you down ?  Bring you to earth with a bang ?
State things like they actually are , shattering fragments of your lala land ?
Respect and regard prevent me , why upset the status quo I feel.
Not fear of confrontation this time ,  I am burning with self-righteous zeal
Purposeless to stir things  short term ,  solicit wrath then leave ,
Better patience ,  generosity with benefit of doubt ,  give argument a reprieve. 
 
Optimum  nobility ?  Selflessness ?   True , care-giving is its own reward .
But mislaid kindness is a vice and nuisance ,  making life for others very hard.
A  hole that we seem to dig for ourselves , wide , deep and definite ,
A chasm of personal choice ,   pulling those we love  around in it
Elephants in the room stir up old forgotten feelings of futility ,
Knots in my throat,  resistance to speech , imposters of humility.
Triggers of anger and irritation , catalysts of anxiety and worry ,
That deep hole again , a shot in the foot , my thoughts scatter in a flurry .
  
The puzzled elephant in the room tries hard to understand  ,
Decipher these confusing shades of grey and prays for a guiding hand ,
Happy to learn and accept differing views ,  ways of life and living.
Empathy abounds in its heart , but truly,  not without some misgiving
It’s superpower to capture the big picture ,  ponder and  think ahead ,
Great to share and speak ,  but there is this persistent silence  instead
All they see are blinkers and barriers  , preconceived notions of doom,
With self control it stifles a retort ,  grappling with the negativity in the room .
 
And then an aha moment ,  it has a clear and significant real-eye-zations.html
“There’s just so much one can do ,  despite mammoth determination” 
Please don’t take our equanimity ,  our load bearing strength for granted ,
Atlas is permitted to shrug sometimes ,  on his shoulders the earth is not planted.
To everything there is a time , enough is enough , the elephant sways into the night ,     
Harnessing the power of letting go ,  better to be kind than right
Head towards unknown pastures with a soft yet determined tread , 
Savour the divinity of dawn ,  shake off apathy and welcome a new day instead.
